As a general rule, run away from old German convertibles.

Good cars in general, but given the age and likely mileage there’s a lot that it could need.. It’s safe to assume that you’ll need to spend over $1000 to replace all the plastic in the cooling system, including radiator and pipes under the intake. Common oil leaks are the plastic valve cover and the oil filter housing on the left side of the block. The tops are fairly reliable as German automatic tops go, but can have hydraulic and latch issues. If the transmission has more than 100k and has never been serviced, it probably won’t last past 150k. Check for a big clunk into D & R, this is often caused by a bad rear diff mount bushing that takes a few hundred dollars to fix. Stab the brakes at walking speed, and if the front wheels move back in the wells by more than an inch you need front control arm bushings, very common.

Either things will be really good for a long time or you are about to faceplant into a money pit. Knowing your way around a wrench or knowing a person or shop that has experience with BMWs will help keep you from the latter. As long as you have money on the side you should be fine.

Just bought a 04 330 CI auto to add to the fleet. Love the E46! If you have not already done so, go to the E46 Fanatics website for a buying guide and checklist. YouTube has hundreds of videos on maintenance and DIY items.
